TR & the media

Compare TR's experience with the media with that of the current president. Speculate on how modern media, such as television and the Internet, might have helped or hindered TR if he were president today. For example, how might TR have fared under the close scrutiny now given to all presidents and presidential candidates? How did TR make "modern" use of the media to foster a particular image of himself?

Make sure that you read chapter 28 in the AP textbook& watched parts 1 & 2 of the documentary before answering the question.

100 word minimum with one reference to a current event or candidate that involves the media.

  1. The media from during Teddy Roosevelt is different from the modern time duet that there was no internet at the time also with the expansion of the internet there is more variety of where to get the information from as well as more reports from different websites that give a certain point of view by how the information is brought good or bad. Also by the way candidates are they will do anything to bring the opponents at a low rate to get a higher rank. The purpose now is to have more supporters and to be heard. It would have be more tough for Roosevelt since during his time action was counted for, but now words, action, and past has to deal with one getting presidency. Through the videos it was quite easy to become president because of all the things he did by taking out corruptions, saving jobs, and so on. It would have been tough if he did get presidency in a way he can be compared to Obama reason for is because he is a good spokesman and is trying to save jobs as well as make things better from what Bush left behind. Since Obama is limited that’s might how it would have turned out, it wouldn’t be that hard because since he is a republican he might have gone a little further since he isn’t a democrat. So it would have been more of a struggle to get the presidency as well as actually make the things he proposed happen because now there is more people and congress plays a huge part of decision making. So again for Roosevelt he could have been president with a little competition, but would have been limited into doing the things he wanted to such as save jobs and get rid of corruption and other things to make it happen and with reporters he would have been a little frustrated because of the way they are now with word changing and he was picky when it came to reporters from the second part of the video.

  2. President Roosevelt had been in office when technology was not the most important aspect of the time. When he was president it had been a time where business corruptions and trusts were a larger deal than anything else. Roosevelt was also known as a war hero, where as our current president, Barack Obama, has no title as such. War heroes were much more in demand at the time Roosevelt was running the country; but in modern times the country wants only a president that can mend what is wrong. President Obama was focused on bringing back the troops from the Middle East and the health care bill, whereas Roosevelt had been lashing out at trusts and starting the building of the Panama Cannel. Though both presidents had been widely popular with the people of the country; gaining enough popularity to win the presidency. If Roosevelt were to go against the republicans in these times, it would have been completely different. His win was quite easy and the fact that he wanted more than one term may have also been his downfall in the race. The views he had in his time are no longer such a huge need in these times; trusts don’t appear as often and there are different means of transportation. His arguments would have been off and adapting would be a tad difficult.

  3. The media that was in the time of Teddy Roosevelt is very different than the media of today. this difference in media was due to the fact that there was no internet; as well there was really no way of getting information around, unlike today were you can go on the internet and find all different recourses as well as opinions. As well as with the media there is scrutiny on every thing that they say, as well everything is broadcasted on television or on the internet, so for example if Obama said something that one area liked, in Roosevelt's time, they would not be hindered, but if they said something in this time period that one area liked and the other didn't he might lose a large area and be in a position that may make him lose the presidency. as well Roosevelt used the media do make him a man that looks like a hero by only telling the media the good things about him and not the bad, little things would leak out now and then but he would find a way to patch them up and make it look all nice again.

  4. As many of you have stated, the media back then has changed and is very different then of todays. Back then, the media would make President Roosevelt look like a hero, many americans would agree since they saw this on the media. One would never see the hidden secrets the president had. But all in all, the media encouraged and amplified Roosevelts strategies and strengths wich makes him a well known figure. Today President Obama reminds the public that over a hundred years ago, Teddy Roosevelt took the changes against all odds and helped eased the powerful monopolistic forces that were in Washington by giving the american people a shot at the American Dream. President Obama today, has become somewhat similar to President Roosevlet. Both were extremly popular which, led to their presidency, but its the little things that make them differ from one another such as Obamacare, these types of social programs favored by our president today would increase the cost of health insurance and lower quality medical care for all, which Theodore Roosevelt would be horrified. In conclusion, todays media has a major impact on not only ones country but also with other nations, since if President Roosevelt had the media that we had, the United States might of not have the control of building the cannal, and some other country would have taken control of it.

  5. I believe media was a huge hinderance to Teddy Roosevelt. The political cartoons on imperialism and how he was in a sense a dictator hurt his cause. Operations such as the purchase of the Panama Canal from France would be swung around and be used against him. However, triumphs from the Spanish-American War helped his cause, because no longer was he just doing war, but winning. This portrayal to the American public helped with his popularity and moving to the Philippines for another war. In modern terms, hinderance to Barack Obama comes from access to the economic data. Such an unstable economy (which is stabling now) caused for uproar from the American public. Social mediums, such as twitter, helped his cause when Osama bin Laden was finally captured. This helped with his popularity among the American public.

  6. I have to agree with the previous posts in many ways, and Roosevelt made himself look great during his presidency. I, however, feel that he was a lot of show, that the people during that time were not able to see on the media. Right in the beginning of the video, we see Roosevelt taking off his jacket in front of a camera and knocks down a tree to represent his power and the power of the nation. Today, if a president would do that, people would say that he just wants to impress on Camera. Alonso ( Utah) mentioned that both, Obama and Roosevelt became president since they were popular, which to some extend is accurate. However, this nation has always been famous for wanting to make History. Therefore the African-American Barack Obama was clearly in advantage from the beginning. I really like what Obama did for this country and I believe that he moved it a huge step forward unlike others, however, it was not his popularity that made him president in my opinion. The media during Roosevelt's presidency was very limited and I believe the media moved with the people. Therefore, it would not have been much of a difference if Roosevelt had a more advanced media in my opinion.

  7. Media during the time of Theodore Roosevelt was very different than it is currently. During Roosevelt’s presidency, media consisted of political cartoons, a couple of photographers, and newspapers. The media both helped and hindered Roosevelt. The political cartoons drawn of him displayed him as a strong and prominent political figure. The photographs taken of him displayed him as a strong orator and fearless public leader. However, some political cartoons and portrayals were quite negative of his forward personality and ideology. Though this media gave him the looks of a dictator and controller, the American public never forgot the strength and rough nature of their president. However, Roosevelt could somewhat control his image back then, for example, when he told photographers never to photograph him playing tennis to keep his reputation. He used the media to his advantage by making sure to have been photographed at certain points that would have flattered his political career and personality. Now, the media, with access to internet and countless ways to enter the president’s life, is unstoppable. The media would have been able to look into his personal life and bring forth everything about the president. Today, we have access to detailed economic statements and several political debates on Obama’s policies, it is impossible for the President to please everyone. Most currently, the fast paced controversy on Obama’s healthcare plan requiring Catholic hospitals to cover contraception ruined his image quite a bit. Because of secret deals Roosevelt made to get his way, especially with the Panama Canal, TR might have suffered under the public eye. However, with the current scrutiny of the media, Roosevelt’s reputation would have changed either way, positively or negatively.

  8. I honestly have to disagree with some peoples comments that the media in Roosevelt's time hindered him. The way that Roosevelt used the media helped him quite a bit especially since he had a lot more control of the media, unlike today. When he went off to the Spanish American war he brought journalists and a camera through other soliders protest. He made sure that most of the media attention he got strengthened his image which exemplified change. This image helped him with popular vote because the country could count on him to progress the country foward. Similiar to Obama and his old Campaign slogan of 'Change' he also got popular vote through his image. The media helped his image too in creating a larger scale of the views of his achievements such as the death of Osama Bin Laden, or his numerical plan for bringing all of our troops home from Iraq. The media that Roosevelt couldn't control was the cartoonist media that sometimes tried to change his image to that of an imperialists or a dictator and in my opinion if the media of today existed during Roosevelt's times it could go either way of affecting his reputation positively or negatively because he wouldn't have the same control of the media as he did back in the day.

  9. I agree with Fernanda. Back then, Roosevelt had at least some control over the media - they were interested in what good he did to the country. Like the documentary said, he called out the newspapers and journalists who only focused on making America look bad, but reminded the country of the good he had caused (i.e. stopping the war between Japan and Russia and therefore, keeping the Philippines safe, the Panama Canal, securing national nature parks, etc.) An advantage of the media back then, was that it was the primary source of information - what you read on the newspaper was what really happened (which made yellow journalism popular with the Maine incident years earlier).
However, nowadays, it's easy to publish whatever information on the Internet, to the point where one cannot trust everything they read online. Also, it is harder to keep secrets from the public with the increasing need of Americans to know what it is happening (not just politically, but also with your Hollywood chismes and stuff). An example of this, would be the example of the deal with Japan that they would be allowed to take over Korea. It can be said, that these news would have gotten out to the public much quicker now, instead of surfacing twenty years later.
Another beneficial factor of the media to both presidents was that they were presented to the public as 'family men'. Roosevelt with his six + children, and especially showing devotion to his youngest son, and the Obama Family portrayed as a close, loving family in order to connect with the public that 'we are all equal'. And it worked. Also, like Aidan said, Twitter helped Obama look good to the public by quickly spreading the word that Osama Bin Ladin, the man who had caused extreme suffering and destruction, had been captured and killed.
If Roosevelt had access to nowadays media, he would probably make Discovery Channel or National Geographic accompany him and make a documentary of the national parks and his hunting trips/tips. Just kidding. If he had lived with this century's advanced media, I believe his actions would be even more glorified that they were back then. He would also perhaps, blatantly express his distaste with conservative Republicans and those who opposed him in congress.

  10. Although there are a significant amount of differences between the media of President Roosevelt’s time to that of the present, the role remains the same. While the media has been used by both President Obama and President Roosevelt to portray themselves in a positive matter and connect to the American people, others in the public use it to voice their disagreements and their opinions on the president. Roosevelt is seen as the first to use the media to his advantage, and rightly so. He was known for holding two press conferences every week, traveling throughout the United States and abroad, and having a photographer follow him everywhere he went. In this way, like most have mentioned before, he portrayed himself as a family man, yet strong and fearless leader. In the same way, President Obama has used the rise in technology to his advantage by using social networks such as Twitter to connect to the American people, as well as taking his political campaign online. Similarly, both Presidents have suffered from being attacked through political cartoons, and both have fought to keep their political image. The only difference that I think is significant enough to change the role of the media during Roosevelt’s time and now is the intensity of political campaigns. During the campaign for his second term, Roosevelt was involved in debates, but his personal life was not a huge factor, and his involvement with the American people proved to be the biggest benefit. Nowadays, all candidates are subject to judgment for their personal lives, and commercials are used to a great extent for political attacks. In the past week, Newt Gingrich threatened to sue TV stations that planned to broadcast an ad from a Mitt Romney super PAC which accused Gingrich of supporting the “one-child” Chinese policy back in 1989. According to Gingrich, this information is false, but it only goes to show how much of an impact media has on a campaign, and how quickly false information can be spread.

  11. Teddy Roosevelt’s experience with the media back then differs from Obama’s or any candidates’ for any political office experience today. Back then one could pretty much decide what went out in the media and what didn’t as Meagan, Alonso, Aiden, and a bunch of others have stated previously. Today candidates must be careful of what they say because they could contradict themselves and the whole world would know. Obama, for example, can’t tell one state “I’m for abortion” and then tell another state “I’m against abortion,” because all of this is recorded on the media. As for back then, it wasn’t as easy to spread out the news in a fast enough time. By manipulating the media, Teddy Roosevelt fostered a great breath taking image of himself. He was a brave, good looking man who took risks and chances for this country. He was fresh and everyone just loved him. He was a cowboy, soldier, scientist, author, and president by the age of 42. He allowed the media to capture the good successes he had which portrayed a good image of him. And as Meagan stated, he never allowed anyone to photograph him while he was playing tennis. Because of his ability to manipulate the media, Teddy Roosevelt was able to preserve his strong “macho” like side. Today, Teddy Roosevelt would have died, metaphorically speaking. As a couple of you have said, he would have seen like a show. I mean a cowboy, scientist, and president, what was next astronaut? The battle at the San Juan Hill, all he did was ride up it and miraculously didn’t get killed. Nowadays, people would have noticed what he truly did and wouldn’t have seen him all that great. The media would have hindered him rather than have helped him out. All the things he did in secret wouldn’t be secrets anymore. In example, the Panama Canal in which not everyone was for and a lot of the fighting in the Philippines was done without the knowledge of the media. I’m not sure if this counts as a “current” event but when Sarah Palin or Hilary Clinton were running the media was all over them. Especially Sarah Palin; how one of her daughters was pregnant and how another one of her daughters was leaving terrible comments on FaceBook. The media was used to sidetrack their political campaign.

  12. Whoa me and Daniela posted a minute apart yeah i dont know why that is significant but anyways....
I have to agree with Esti and Fernanda. And I'd like to add that nowadays, one's political campaing can be ruined by false information posted on the web as Esti had said. Rumors are easier to spread today than back then yet rumors are easier to prove wrong nowadays so hmm I'm not quite sure anymore. Because for example they said Jefferson had multiple affairs with black women but it was harder to prove that false back then than it is today.

  13. I think it’s safe to say there was media in both TR's era and or own, it’s just the fact that ours is a lot more easily accessible and there is more of it as opposed to newspaper printings and political comics that would have to be picked up from a city so people out in rural places really had little knowledge of what was going on. There had always been mudslinging that would occur during election times, in fact that still occurs to today in different ways. Lies and scandals were released in media they had at the time but not without cover ups and exaggerations made up as well. It seems the media really help pushed all the good things about TR and covered up or ignored all the bad side notes about him. With the factors of not everyone being able to connect to the media and be informed of what’s going on and a sense of media control, the media seemed to work as a great advantage to TR and that era. Today, if Obama blows his nose into Puffs plus Vicks tissue, we’ll know about it. Every detail is recorded and sent out to the media, good, bad or embarrassing; so if the president has screwed up past present or future, you can bet everyone in not only the US will be talking about it, but possibly the entire world thanks to the internet. Things like satellite internet now allows people who live in the middle of nowhere get internet so that they two can be in the loop and in turn influence their voting decision.

  14. Roosevelt presented himself positively before and throughout his presidency. However, during the Spanish American war he even took cameras and journalists to record him and exemplify his strength. The fact is that the media was not as fast as some wanted it to be. Even when the media did announce the entirety of the truth, similar to yellow journalism, which as Philip Kreissl says he seems to be a lot of show. It differs from yellow journalism because it’s not so much exaggerated material but more so one sided so to a certain extent the media could be considered a primary source document. However, nowadays, it's easy to publish whatever information on the Internet, to the point where one cannot trust everything they read online. Also, like Aidan said, and Esti reiterated, Twitter helped Obama look good to the public by quickly spreading the word that Osama Bin Ladin, had been captured and killed.

  15. Back then it was easier to control and manipulate the media because it took long time for reporters and photographers to spread the information through the whole United States because they didn't had the technology that we have now a days like internet, news channels, etc. Today, if the president will go to someplace everyone would know because in news channel, newspaper, social networks would communicate to their audience and it would take some hours even minutes to spread it all over the country. When Roosevelt was president technology wasn't that advanced and the information took a lot of time to go through the whole nation and also it was easier to manipulate the information because Roosevelt made the photographers to only show the photos that made him look as a great president showing just his virtues and not his negative side. Now a days, the president has to be more careful about what he says about his actions because immediately the press shows it to the whole nation even to the whole world. One time I don't know from what magazine I saw a picture where Obama was with some friends in a backyard drinking beer and in the magazine showed some comments of how people thought it was incorrect from Obama letting the press and people see him drinking beer when other people saw it normal to see an american in his backyard drinking beer with his friends. This shows how the president can't satisfy every person in this country and has to be careful about what he does in public because everyone has different opinions and they can't take it as wrong. Roosevelt was able to avoid this type of issues because he was able to manipulate the media like Meagan and Kristie said he told photographers not to show photos of him playing tennis because he wanted to keep his reputation. If the media from today existed during Roosevelt's presidency like Fernanda said it could benefit him or affect him because his virtues and defects would have been shown to the whole world.

  16. Media, throughout the years, has changed tremendously. The media of Theodore Roosevelt’s time was much simpler that it is today. In my own opinion, I feel that the media in Roosevelt’s time helped him within his own presidency. Control is one of the main issues that separates Teddy Roosevelt’s experience with President Obama’s experience. TR was able to control much of the media the circulated within the nation. TR used the media to his advantage by helping him create his good reputation and having people like him. By using the media like this, it made Teddy Roosevelt popular giving him the popular vote. Just like any experiences, there are people that want to put others down and that is what the cartoonists of Roosevelt’s time did. They tried to change the image of Teddy Roosevelt. Back in the day, one could decide exactly what went into the media however, that has changed as the years have progressed. In one minute, something happens and in the next, everyone knows due to the media. People nowadays have to take extreme caution in what they say because whatever one says, it will be on some kind of media sooner or later. One of the major advantages of the media back in the days was that they were all the primary source of information as Esti had stated. Everything in the media back then, was the truth. In the media now, it is extremely easy for one to put false information on the internet. Nothing can be kept from this nation with the technology nowadays whether it is a secret or not. An example of this could be the death of Whitney Houston. Within a few hours of her death, an a plethora of people knew what had happened. The same thing happened with Osama Bin Laden’s death. Personally, I feel that today’s technology and media would have hindered Teddy Roosevelt experience.

  17. Teddy Roosevelt involved the media in the sense that he wanted to control the output; if a certain media were to portray him as "bad", Roosevelt would get involved. In today's society, I'm not so sure he would be able to be very active, as he was before. The media today has a tendancy to try and exaggerate to appeal to the public; whatever Roosevelt tried to do to counter-act their attempts to discredit him, would be backfired, to discredit him. Like Anthony Cruz said, Roosevelt is disguinshed by Obama by his ability to control situations, however times are different, and I think controlling any media is harder today than it was before.
Popularity was more so on Roosevelt's side than it currently is on Obama's, but even if the two were equally as popular, today's media is too demanding; the mass population is always looking for entertainment, and since that's what the viewers want, that's what everyone will try to provide. Everyone today is all about the now; they want to know what's happening as it happens, and if the entertainment is not there provided along with the fast information, viewers begin to lose interest. In today's society, the media does exaggerate in order to get the result's they want; regardless of their personal opinions, the media will report what will get ratings. It wouldn't matter what Roosevelet was doing; if there was nothing interesting to report, the media will expand the truth, good or bad.

  18. I have to agree with Meagan that media during Roosevelt’s time is way different than the media used today to publicize and portray presidential candidates and the president himself. I also agree with Meagan that the media both helped and hindered Roosevelt. The newspapers and political cartoonists portrayed him as a hero, someone that people liked and as a strong willed person that was a great orator. Also photographs that were taken of him showed him as a person with strength and as a fearless leader. People that also came in contact with Roosevelt gave firsthand accounts of how he was and portrayed him as a strong leader who was dependable. Also the media portrayed him as a man who wanted the best for his people, such as the bill that he wanted passed for the people that worked in the cigar making business so that their employers couldn’t exploit them. This made him favorable to the citizens of America but the media also portrayed him in a bad way because of his forward personality, calling him a steam engine, and his ideology. Back then too Roosevelt was able to control what the media saw and he could use it to his advantage. Such as in the documentary where it showed him chopping down the tree and it could be used to portray his strong willed personality. He was able to make sure the media could only show the good things in his life. Now in days a presidential candidate and the president can’t keep their lives hidden because the media allows us to know every single detail about them. Social media allows us to keep a close tabs on the presidents every move and their ideology. The media can help, as it did in President Obama’s case , with the number of votes you receive. He was able to include the young people in his election through this. But the media has also hindered the president because they publicize things that bring about issues with certain groups of people, like the church giving out birth control.

  19. I believe that the media would have been beneficial for Teddy Roosevelt to a certain extent. My reasoning behind this is because of course people back then obviously saw him as a hero because of the person he appeared to be. Now, many politicians find it rather difficult and more challenging to win elections because with the media your personal life is harder to keep personal. One example is how one of the republican politicians in the running GOP presidential election, he cheated on his wife and lost many votes. See because of the media things are most likely to come up, helping the people become more aware. We must keep in mind that the media does like to reveal the worst of people more than the good, especially when it comes to politics. If Teddy Roosevelt was to come into society today, with the media I think from what we know he would be exposed as a great hero and a good person, but also his beliefs and perspective on certain issues would also be well exposed, making it harder for him now than before. People before were informed more about him as a person and accomplishments rather than his beliefs making it easier for him to win the election. Therefore, what I’m trying to say is that he would have still been perceived as a hero and a good leader because that is who he was, but it would be harder for him to win an election because society is more informed about issues and beliefs of the politics in today’s society, unlike the people from back then. So if he was to come into our generation with the media he would only benefit from it to a certain extent.

  20. I have to agree with Meagan and Annissa because the media helped and hindered Roosevelt's presidency. The media during Roosevelt's time is much different than modern times for the fact that back then people didn't have laptops, ipods, radios, phones, or the internet so people had to use their available sources which included news that took a while to deliver they didn't have cars like now. President Obama could use T.V's or radios if he needs to communicate with the people of the U.S. During president Roosevelt's presidency political cartoons were used to describe how he was sort of a dictator. However Theodore Roosevelt was also seen as a strong leader and presidential canidate. political cartoons are still used today. media helps all presidential canidates recieve the amount of votes because they use the power of t.v and radio to make campaign commercials and announcements. During roosevelts time it was much harder to run for president because people didn't have the technology we do today. Today people care about who has opinions that relate to theirs or who has the better campaign or who's more popular and well known.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Around Teddy Roosevelt's time the media as most of us have said was relatively hard to deliver to the people as the fastest source of transportation was the railroad only delivering newspapers, photographs and of course, political cartoons. During Teddy’s presidency he was able to manipulate the media into only what he want the public to see and basically give him an advantage to be seen as a president who is well in control. This idea of control as Meagan said was also seen as a pessimistic view towards the president and essentially made him look like a dictator which wasn’t the massage Teddy initially wanted. Today however, the media have evolved up to the point where someone in California can receive a message for New York within seconds and this idea is again both good and bad by the different viewpoints. On one side we have that the messages of the president are given to the people instantly and give the people a true look at who is their actual president almost as if were there looking at him in person. On the other hand unwanted media can appear from just about anywhere so there is this problem from just how true something is and unlike Teddy, Obama isn’t that much protected from the media so almost anything good or bad that the president does. If Teddy where to be President today he too would have been seen by the media playing probably Tennis which was one thing he didn’t want the people to see being that it has the potential to change the views of many Americans. Also in some cases even happening today the candidates use the media to hinder the other candidates and if Teddy were to be in office I’m more than sure the candidates would find something wrong with him.

  22. The media of today is obviously very different from the time of Theodore Roosevelt. Today, many candidates use the media to their own advantage. A great example of today’s use of technology is the current candidates up for nomination for president of the United States. Constantly, there are ads being run on television either promoting their own figure, or bashing another opponent. With today’s great use of television and broadcasting, the people can also be notified and informed of their fellow candidates. Throughout Roosevelt’s time and even before, the people had to rely on local newspapers or rather attend a local meeting concerning the issue. With this, they only had the reliability of ONE source. However, today, we have more to rely on than just our average source of newspapers and television. We also have the use of the Internet, which we can connect to in so many ways (Even through the own convenience of our mobile phones). For presidents back then, including Theodore Roosevelt, most newspapers were out to notify public of either their flaws or actions as a politician-nothing more. As Theodore Roosevelt was in office, he gradually began to modernize this use of media in a new way. As Estibaliz stated, and as to what was constantly brought up in the videos, Theodore Roosevelt was portrayed as “family man”. Almost throughout every moment, Roosevelt was caught doing something with his family or even just related to such a loving and noble figure. This might have caught the eye of people simply because he could be seen as someone who could relate to them in a more personal manner. Like our president today, Obama is portrayed in the same way. For both, this is great advantage by the use of media, allowing more people to be on their side.
Today, if Roosevelt had the opportunity to the great use of technology that we use daily, he might have fared quite positively and efficiently. In addition to his family man portrayal, Roosevelt most likely would have included his accomplishments and other noble events that he accomplished, making him a further likeable president and candidate. As most candidates do today, Theodore Roosevelt would have used the media to his advantage to further promote his likable figure, and let the people hear what they want to hear (or at least what he wants them to hear). However, this could be a disadvantage as seen today for many candidates, presidents and celebrities. With the rise of technology and media comes a great, personal price. Being in the spotlight means having your personal life publicized as well. As seen before, this can hurt many candidates and presidents. Whether it’s by scandals, poor choices made, or even the smallest fraction of flaw/mess up; presidents’ reputations have gone up in flames. (Ex: President Clinton with his sex scandal, or even President George W. Bush with his poor party reputation of his daughters that have reflected him as a bad father and person.) In the end, it’s a matter of how you use the media, and for the most part, Theodore Roosevelt seems like he could have benefited from it greatly.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The evolution of media is extremely evident in our society. The use of media has been abused and has changed dramatically. However what hasn’t change is the use of the media to portray someone in a certain light. For example with presidential candidates such as Newt Gingrich. The media has been used in order to highlight his marital scandals. Teddy Roosevelt was able to use the media in a positive light and emphasize the fact he was a family man while also being a firm leader. Nevertheless whether it is the late 1800’s or 2012 politicians, there is always going to be scrutiny of some kind especially emphasized through media. In the end, the public thrives on scandals and take in anything that is interesting. So for TR to come and take advantage of the media and use it to the fullest shocked people and was a breath of fresh air. On the other hand if TR was a politician in 2012, I believe he wouldn’t have been able to shine his life so positively. Somewhere down the road modern day media would have taken a small mistake and blown it up into a front page outrage. Plus news travels faster through all the social networking sights and online gossip columns.

  24. During the first decade of the 1900s in which president Roosevelt took office, it is obvious that technology was less advanced than it is today. For instance there was no internet, televisions and the radio was still not available for many Americans. However as we all know, Theodore Roosevelt was one of the first presidents to make use of technology not only to promote his presidential campaigns but to increase his popularity among Americans. This new technique proved to be quite effective, not to mention the fact that Roosevelt was a war hero and such title gave a significant advantage for presidential candidates at the time. Therefore in my opinion, if Roosevelt would have had the technology we utilize nowadays, his levels of popularity could have been greater than today’s president.

  25. I agree with Meagan and Annissa in part that during Teddy Roosevelt's time, presidential candidates and the president were portrayed differently in contrast to how the media has developed through innovative technological advancements today. Therefore, I also agree in the fact that Roosevelt utilized the media to support his role in politics, yet it also hindered his power. Many of the political cartoons depicted a characterized heroic-figure for Teddy Roosevelt, for photographs taken became additionally beneficial that showed Roosevelt as a man of strength and power through leadership. The people that confronted Roosevelt supported his valuable presence as a man of dependency and righteous intent. Most of Teddy Roosevelt's decisions were made in the best interest of the people that made him the most favorable to the people of America. Moreover, an exemplary enactment by Roosevelt was made through the advocation for the implication of a bill so that the employers would not cause exploitation of the workers within the cigar industry. The dominance over the media entailed the imminence of his apostle-form perpetuating his significance and commendable actions towards America(Roosevelt controlled the dispersion of media that would heighten the image he created to show that he is a competent individual of authority). President Obama and President Roosevelt are similar in the fact that the usage of the media has been made to develop their image as a desirable leader that yearns to hear the voice of the people, but unfortunately oppression of other opposing forces will instigate the actions the presidents put forth so that the oponent's opinion is enforced. President Obama has taken advantage of the advancements of communication and promotes the use of technology in providing his availability through the web. As a result of progression, the lingering opposition of demise awaits as the bombardment of deliberated cartoons showing the "wrong-doing" and "characterized-incompetent figures" of these presidents. The constant fight to obtain these influentially imperative roles through leadership in support of representing the peoples' voice is always consistent. Daniela has made a valid point in establishing that the intensity of political campaigns are at an all time high through the determination of superior power. The connection of the American people created by Roosevelt was the only benefactor that was mostly looked upon ( the personal life he had was not contemplated nor incorporated towards the form of his role as a dignitary). Presently, the political candidates are bound to confront adversity through the revealed personal lives they have as well as become discontent at the attacks through the media. “A political candidate used our platform to reach voters in two large areas of upstate New York. Using geographical targeting on websites like local news, national news, and sports, we created a campaign to drive a significant concentration of online impressions to voters within this region. The advertising campaign reached over 10 million impressions in 11 days and met the candidate’s goal of increasing awareness at a higher-than-average click-thru-rate (CTR),” said Mike Snow, Chief Business Development Officer of Intermarkets.( Martha Patterson, Intermarkets, Inc.) However, there are also other political candidates that can distort the intent of this particular candidate so that they gain more support, it's a world of competence. The vast dispersion through the media proves how efficient it has become in determining how candidates can become successful or reach their demise in a matter of a simple miniscule remnant of time to the next.

  26. Around Teddy Roosevelt’s time the media back then was very hard to deliver and the only fastest transportation that was around that time were the railroads which transported political cartoons, newspapers and many other information that needed to be transported. I have to agree with Roy that back then they didn’t have modern media as us such as iPods, radios, phones, or the internet in order to get and see the information faster. Media today helps all presidential candidates to receive the amount of votes because of the internet, TV and radios to have updates of the presidential elections. Teddy Roosevelt was able to manipulate the media and he will tell photographers to not show photos in public of him doing what most people won’t think he would do. If the media that we have now were in Roosevelt’s presidency would of affected him and all of his secrets would have been shown in the world.

  27. The use of media during the presidency of Roosevelt and the presidency of Obama are extremely different. Although unlike, both of the Medias used seem to create advantages and disadvantages for each president. During the presidency of Roosevelt the media used were photographs, newspapers, and political cartoons. This entire media was able to be manipulated by Theodore Roosevelt. He used this advantage, to portray himself as a strong, outstanding political figure. Roosevelt could control the moments in which he believed would not have benefitted his campaign. However, the disadvantages of this media for Roosevelt were the political cartoons which only affected him negatively. These cartoons portrayed him as a controlling president. In the other hand, the media used today during Obama’s presidency is different from that of Roosevelt’s presidency. Technology today is more rapid than the media used back then. This means that the accomplishments of Obama’s presidency are spread more quickly. For example when Osama Bin Laden was killed the technology swiftly spread the word only increasing the support of Americans for Obama. His campaign also spread as rapidly through the use of twitter, and much cheaper than the campaigns of other past presidents. However, this extremely rapid, spreading technology is also increasingly common, and increasingly limiting the private life of presidents. President Obama can no longer hide what he wishes from the public. Not only is his political life exposed to the public but also his private life. Technology now exposes the life Obama, forcing the pressure of public eye even more than in Roosevelt’s presidency. Yet, this constant watch of the public can create an advantage; if Obama lives the idealistic life that the public want see, then this will only bring more supporters to Obama. For example, through the swift technology of today people are able to see that Obama is a family man, which is just what the Americans see as an ideal president.

  28. During Teddy Roosevelt’s time the idea of the media and its use towards political issues was revolutionizing. The media was using everything they could to hurt and limit the influence of Roosevelt, they used political cartoons that made Teddy look bad and almost as a dictator saying he wanted complete rule over America and its citizens. The Panama Canal, which is very important today, was used against Roosevelt to hurt his stand with the people. He was judged not only for his career but also for his personal life, since he portrayed himself as a stable family man the media wanted to twist this as soon as they got an opportunity. The only thing that helped him was his success in the Spanish-American it demonstrated that he wasn’t just all bark but that he would actually bite if you messed with him. Today technology is the biggest thing and so is commercialism and of course both the internet and TV making it difficult for anyone who is famous escape the media’s attention. As of today Obama is the president of the United States making him a big target for the media anything they can get on him they will exploit just the same as with Roosevelt. Obama has been viewed as a bad president because he couldn’t deal with what Bush left him with which in my opinion no president could deal with it. The media has used this against him and has also invaded his private life exploiting their every action. The only thing that helped Obama as well was war, during his time the army took out Bin Laden and captured other wanted terrorists which raised his popularity among Americans.

  29. Teddy Roosevelt was never a shy man during or before his presidency. His goals and opinions as the second video were stated. He wasn’t afraid to voice them. This made him human, relatable, and ultimately real. He was a president of firsts and although, in comparison to the technology of the 21st century, he was constantly in the limelight. Roosevelt was more open in sharing his personal life, (minus his secret tennis matches) with the people and showing them that he wasn’t some hermit living in a mansion just for kicks and giggles. He was real in the sense that he made it known that he was middle class oriented and had moral values and family values. He gave the media and the people no reason to find fault in him for he presented himself openly, so that no one could find a fault that he hadn’t already admitted too, and if they did accuse him then he would confront them with haste no doubt. Really he would be able to defend himself in a more timely manner. In comparison to the upcoming elections media plays a huge role in the spreading of information, be it reliable or unreliable. Not only can the media present information to the public but candidates for the presidency as well as the current president himself is able to present information to the public be it in the use of websites, conferences or any number of social networking ways of getting their messages to people. Based on Roosevelt’s usage of the media at his time, it is undeniable that he would use the media to portray that lively strong character even more so, and would more than likely work harder to be this man knowing he would be under the constant watchful eye of the media. Roosevelt wasn’t afraid to join the people and speak to them as simply people! His views or opinions did not change according to whom he was speaking too. TR used the media to show him at his finest, and perhaps that may seem more difficult to do now with media swarming like a drone of bees, based on how he took full use of the media to his benefit, he would do the same today. Roosevelt made it clear he wasn’t in the race for simply a title. He wanted things to get real quick efficiently for everyone. News is spread like wildfire nowadays and Roosevelt’s accomplishments goals and ideology would have spread that much faster than it had when media was less efficient. I believe he would use it to its full extent, accept Media’s flaws and run with it. He would reach out to people as much as possible and not hold back. Scandals and such are present then and now, it all falls on the president or candidate’s wise usage of his resources at hand to make them seen. If Roosevelt could get his name out and become so popular and moving with the technology or yore, than he would do so much more with the media resources of today.

  30. Theodore Roosevelt was not a shy man and he was never afraid to voice his opinion. Unlike many of his predecessors, there was no sense of mystery about the man. He was never afraid to hide his life from the country. It has been noted that on almost every trip he had ever been on a camera was not too far. He didn’t want to give the media any reason or fault that they could go on. In a sense he was the most real president the nation had seen in decades. Everyone knew his name and who he was rather than just a politician. The American people were able to relate to the outgoing and middle-class supporting president. Media can make or break a president's career. The media can bash a president throughout their entire term, reducing the amount of pull they have with the nation, or it can support the president and help turn the tide of politics. Roosevelt knew that it was smarter to just work with the media rather than against it. By keeping himself open to the public there was no chance of false media reports or skepticism. There was not part of his life that he wasn’t willing to share on camera making him the most human president we know with both morals, values, and a life outside of his work. The people knew him and, throughout his career, began to trust him through a bond he had created through media. By sharing his persona through media there was not a single person in the nation that could say anything to the contrary of how he acted in front of a camera. Had he had the chance to use media of today he would surely use it to spread his words and ideals, not caring about who went against him, but caring about the topics and issues he cared for. Though he would be known as a man of the people it is safer to say that he was a man that stood by his convictions and did not waver for the sake of pleasing a crowd.

During the times of Theodore Roosevelt the media present were newspapers and films. He continually courted the press and media unlike any other president before. Every new thing that Roosevelt tried to do, the reporters were there. From the moment he became a politician to the moment he became commissioner to the acceptance of vice president. He was a go-getter and tried everything he wanted to do. This trait was a big influence that led to many newspaper articles that were about his actions throughout his life. With television and internet, the news of Roosevelt’s actions would have been spread faster and more efficiently. He would have earned the trust and votes of the Americans quicker. With television, advertisements would be seen because they pop up many times during television programs, so no one would ever forget the advertisement of Roosevelt’s presidency or other actions. Internet is helpful too. Everyone nowadays is on the computer constantly doing stuff. If it had existed then, news would be faster, we would learn about Roosevelt better, and advertisements could be placed as well. Of course with the advantages of new technology in use back then would also come with disadvantages. For example, not only you would have such technology. Many of the people against you would have the ability to comment and post negative things about you causing you to look bad in front of public. New technology also allows you to choose what you want to see or not. This is also a big thing today. For example with Obama, he is able to send service announcements regarding his candidacy over the television easily but then again, the viewers can choose to change the channel.

  32. Modern technology differs greatly from the technology seen in Roosevelt's day. Today's technolgy allows us to confer messages to people half way across the world and back within minutes, and at times, even seconds. In Roosevelt's time, things were much different. Technology did not allow them to move as fast and process as much information as it does today. Because of this, I believe that Roosevelt was at a greater advantage, than that of modern day presidents. As many people before me have stated, he did not have to deal with the internet because word traveled slower in that time period. People did not rely on the internet, gossip magazines, television, etc. simply because they did not exist or they do not possess the same amount of information that the modern day equivalent would have. It was easier for him to keep his personal life out of his presidency. The media was not as into his personal life, like they would be in our times. He had it easy. During Teddy Roosevelt’s time, I am sure that people gossiped about him, but it took longer for people to hear about things, than it does in modern times. In the United States, many people have internet on their phones, on which they can access just about anything, from rumors to facts to alleged facts. With the resources available today, Roosevelt could have made his presence known and spread his word faster and better. If he were to run in our modern day elections, he may possibly not have won. The absence of technology in Roosevelt’s time, made it possible for him to be named president. If this were different, the whole world could have changed.

  33. The media during the time of Theodore Roosevelt was the newspaper as the video stated. The media now is television, Internet, social networks, and much more. TR used the media to it's full extent, and portrayed himself as a family man with family values and strong convictions. He was a self-righteous man and he was sure he was always right and anyone who disagreed was very wrong. Though there was a limit of media back then, that did not stop Roosevelt. He had photographers and camera men follow him wherever he went sometimes including off to war with his rough riders. Using the media had both a negative and positive effect. Newspapers and cartoonists focused in his imperialist views which made him seem controlling and dictator-like. The positive effect was the morals he portrayed and the reforms he wanted to make in the country were known by all citizens, and therefore the people loved him. Today the president must use every resource he has to give himself a good name, and make the people love him. I think it is much harder to do that today than back then because so much information is available to people nowadays, and any rumor can go against you once enough people believe it. I believe TR would have used the media to his advantage in today's society, but I also believe there would be a much bigger negative effect than there was in his time. Today the tiniest mistake made by the president or any candidates can be blown up into a huge scandal. Someone would have found something about TR's past and used it against him. As many people have already mentioned, TR asked not to be photographed while he was playing tennis. Today that request would have been ignored and newspapers and magazines would pay a lot of money for a picture of TR playing tennis. There is also the fact that almost all debates, press conferences, and speeches are televised or available on the Internet. Back then TR could say something in one town that he knew would win the people, but say something different in another town mug farther away and only very observing citizens would recognize this technique. That is no longer possible today although some candidates still use this method.

  34. During his time I’m sure that Theodor Roosevelt had a lot of criticism as well as a lot of admirers but just the fact that the media was getting more advances was both helping him and holding him back. With all of the reporters it was easier to get news around and thus causing either a good or a bad impact on the people. Back then it still took a while for the information to get passed around. However if he would have lived nowadays like Obama all of his information would get around in a matter of seconds with the internet and all of the fancy new equipment. Back then it was possible to have some sort of privacy but now it is as if there is none at all for anybody. Technology could really be the up rise or downfall of someone’s career.

The major difference between the media during TR’s presidency and the current president’s is the use and availability of technology. During Roosevelt’s time, media mostly consisted of and pertained to newspapers. Roosevelt used the newspaper to its full potential by creating a good image of him for the newspaper to portray. This worked towards his advantage because people loved him because of the great things they would hear about him in the paper. Just by reading the newspaper, one could collect that Roosevelt was a great family oriented man with good morals and reforms for the country, thus causing a great deal of followers. Media in the present day has completely changed since then. There are now many more ways of getting information to the public. A major one is the internet because information on the president, whether it by good or bad or true or false, and be easily found just by typing in a few key words into a search engine such as Google. On top of that, there are social networks. A lot of campaigning is done on social networks such as Twitter or Facebook. This exposure to politicians can be good by helping the president gain popularity, but it also becomes very hurtful because anything can be said on the internet and many people use these social networks to talk bad about the president. Another common media source that wasn’t available to TR is commercials. During election times, there are countless commercials trying to help the presidential candidates gain or lose votes. Even First Lady Michelle Obama can be seen on television doing PSAs on channels like Disney Channel to promote Obama and his morals. Technology just opens many doors for haters of the president to voice their opinions and try to sway others into what they believe. Maybe if this technology was around during TR’s time, his presidency would be totally different. I think that TR wouldn’t have as many supporters. Rather than just creating a good image for newspapers, he would have to worry about countless other media portals. For example, haters of TR could have started pages on social networks and make TR sound like a major imperialist. TR won really easily, but I think that maybe if there was more media, it would have been more difficult.

  36. During Roosevelt’s term or time in general, they did not have technology to help out in their campaign. In today’s society, we have television, radio, computers, cell phones, etc. to help us find out the information we want, in this case, whose running for president. At this point in our time, there is an upcoming election for president. During this whole time of campaigning, most candidates have used commercials broadcasted on TV to compliment them in order to get more supporters. But in Theodore Roosevelt’s time, this was most definitely how it did not work, in fact, corruption with businesses and trusts were the bigger issue at this point. Had Roosevelt lived through this period of technology, his campaign would both develop and possibly be torn down. It would develop in the sense that he would gain a lot more publicity as well as supporters. Now on the other had in TR’s time, if he made a mistake, all he would have to worry about is telling the editor of the paper, but in our modern society, his mistake would not only be all over the internet but constantly picked at. Therefore, by adapting to our time and the way our presidential campaigns are run, I think it would be both beneficial and hectic for Roosevelt.

  37. During Theodore Roosevelt’s time, technology wasn’t the main “hit”. When presidents campaigned, newsletters, and journalism would record the speeches and successes of each president. Television, the internet, electronic newspapers, and electronic recorders didn’t exist during this time. When President Obama was elected, his campaigns and speeches were broadcast so people all over the world could see and hear what he had to say. During Roosevelt’s time, many cities and towns didn’t hear a word until the newsletter was delivered or if Theodore was there to give his speeches. With current media, Roosevelt would be a little bit more secure and careful for what choice of words he uses. If one sentence was abruptly said during one of his speeches, the current media would record it and store it into their files. Plus, many people all over the world would see his mistake. This can lead to a failure in Presidency for Roosevelt. It would be difficult for Roosevelt to correct his mistake or track down the media in stopping his recorded speech. This compared to his media, the time it would take for journals and newsletters to travel over the U.S. would take months. Some parts of the U.S. were unaware of Roosevelt’s accomplishments because how long it would take the media to spread the word. Overall, Roosevelt would have been just a little more aware the power the media holds in our current time. Even if it isn’t the media, people have the ability to record what they hear or what they “think” they heard. This can lead towards voting differently when electing a president.

  38. The media of Teddy Roosevelt’s time differed from todays by the available technology that we have today. When Roosevelt was in office the latest technology that there was the newly made typewriter and automatic printing press. Whereas today we have computers, television, radio, mobile devices, the Internet etc. all these things that make running for president all the more easy to announce and able for voters to learn about. If Roosevelt were to have campaigned for president in present times it would be much harder or difficult to win or possibly easier to win. It would be a challenge to win because Roosevelt’s every move will be on camera, recorded, and viewed by the American people meaning that there is little to no room for error. Unlike in Roosevelt’s time when messages and news would take weeks if not months to deliver and because there were hundreds of reporters that would hear different things there would be multiple variations of the story. This was especially true when the messages were relayed to others by a friend, relative, etc. Roosevelt for his time had managed to use the media to his benefit by being in places where the media could arrive to see him doing something very positive or encouraging to the crowds of voters. He was also portrayed as being a strong, well educated, light hearted person that was easy to like.

  39. Before and throughout Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, he maintained a sense of control over the media. He only allowed for photographers to take pictures of him when he did certain things to shine light on his strengths and make himself favorable to the public. This was an advantage for Roosevelt because information did not travel as quickly and proficient as it does today. Which could in the same sense be considered a disadvantage at the time because the information was not only slow to travel from place to place but also had the possibility of inaccuracy. Today's main media used is the television and the internet which seems to be more popular. Information on the web streams extremely rapidly and gives people the power to interconnect, which gives our former President Obama both an advantage and disadvantage. The advantage of media traveling at a fast rate is that Obama can easily communicate messages to the public through multiple ways. We have the ability to watch his speeches on the web, read about political affairs he is engaged in, learn about policies Obama passes, and so forth. A prime example of modern media being put to good use is when recently a couple days ago an article on the MPRnews website was released about Obama "injecting himself" into a debate about an issue of women's rights. Specifically about contraception and whether it should be covered by healthcare or not.
The article mentions it gave Obama the opportunity to portray himself as a supporter of women's rights.
Although the fast media can work in favor of the president, it can also be unfavorable in the sense that it puts Obama under a great deal of pressure. His every move it being monitored by what seems like the entire American public. Not only as his presidential life but his personal life as well. Essentially making it impossible for Obama to censor and hide parts of his political and personal affairs, such as Teddy Roosevelt did.

  40. In the days of president Roosevelt the technology wasn’t what it is today. Back then it was tough for the media to get actual facts out with strong bases since the people had to take the word of the writers. So it was easy for the people to disregard the things that the newspapers put out. And President would work with that to enhance the way that the public saw him which was that of a war hero. So small mistakes or things he said are not likely to be spread as vastly. Take for example the presidential gop candidates if they mutter a small phrase that insults any group of people they will get torn apart and it will never be forgotten. Then the media doesn’t need to do a lot of work to show the commentary all they have to do is put the video on the news or on the web. And in an hour the whole nation knows of what they said.
